Last year, I made a post honoring my favorite Old Hollywood costumes (for women). Although I would love to wear all of the gowns and outfits featured in that post, they're aren't exactly the kind of things I would or could wear everyday. Below is a list of some of my personal style icons wearing clothes, accessories, and/or hairstyles that I wouldn't mind emulating for everyday wear.

Although I love Josephine Baker's iconic spit curls, the look is not something I can see myself rockin'. However, the long ponytail era was ever-ree-thing! I could see myself wearing such a ponytail for a night out with the girls.

Is there an earring "fandom"? Because I love nice earrings. Especially BIG earrings. La Baker's earrings alone are unsung.

By the way, recreations of some of La Baker's looks are available through the Phoenix Project.

Don't trust anyone who says that Audrey Hepburn is overrated as a style icon.

Classic red/print combination!

Lovely! (photo above)

I made so many sad attempts to get this ponytail my freshman year of college. |

Of course, there will be Dorothy Dandridge!
Anyone who knows me knows how hard I "stan" for this dress:

Photo below: I would love to be able to see the entire dress. The top half looks lovely. Let's talk about the hair, too, shall we? The greatest hairstyles came from the 1940s, if you ask me.

I also love big bows and would definitely rock Queen Dottie D's "Zoot Suit" curls with one.

Love, love, love this look!

And this look! Check out the arm cuff!

"Adrienne, could yo go to the store to pick up a loaf of bread?"
"Sure, let me slip into something comfortable."
But seriously, don't you think this (photo above) would make a lovely alternative to the usual summer sundress or romper?

Photo above: Simple, but still eye-catching.
From Swing Fashionista |
Photo above: I would definitely wear something like this. I love lapel-collared tops. In fact, she actually wore a lot of tops (and dresses) like this.

Isn't this a darling look? I would love to wear something like this in the spring.

Such a list would not be complete without "Mother Eartha"--Ms. Eartha Kitt--a woman who had versatile style to go with her myriad of talent!
Where would a "cat woman" be without her cat print?
From The Huffington Post |
From Madame Fedora |
Like Josephine Baker, Mother Eartha also wore some pretty nice ponytails--particularly during the 1960s.
During one of the greatest moments in American History, IMO (Gif Source) |
Of course, I had to include a "Catwoman" photo (From CatWomanMeow) |
Gotta love shorts!
From Tasty Gumbo |
Photographed by none other than Gordon Parks (From Orchid Grey) |

Here is a woman whose talent and style are both unsung. One of my favorite singers, Ms. Mary Wells.
Another great ponytail! (From Wikimedia Commons) |
The photo below is actually one of my favorite photographs in general. Ms. Wells looks beautiful, her hair is perfect, her makeup is perfect. Just a beautiful, beautiful photo.
From Long Shot's Blues |
More great hair (From Find-A-Grave) |
Eaaariiiings!!!
I love the blonde look on Ms. Wells, too.

No list can reign supreme if there are no Supremes.
My favorite photo of them (From Stonewall Vets) |
Need some hair inspiration? The Supremes.

I love Ms. Florence's boots in this picture below:

Two ironic things happened before I received the unfortunate news Tuesday evening. After pacing the floor and staring at my mom's bookshelf, I decided that I was going to re-read the autobiography, By Myself. Then, when I'd taken a break from typing this post on the afternoon of August 12th, I'd decided who would be next in this list of my style icons. Lauren Bacall.
As I'd shared in a post on Tuesday, Lauren Bacall was one of two women (Nina Mae McKinney being the other) who made me fall in love with French berets.
Ms. Bacall also made me a fan of clothing with houndstooth and checkered patterns--especially suits!
Now, not only does the dress below look ravishing and sexy, but it also looks extremely comfortable!

In the photo below--is that a shirt or a dress? It may look like a first grader's sewing project, but that's what makes it charming. I'd definitely wear it.

And finally, there's "that girl!" Oh, the many dress choices I've made because of Marlo Thomas in That Girl...

I wish I could find the outfit above in color! If memory serves me correctly, the colors are red, blue, and gold.
There are so many other great outfits missing from Google, but if you've never seen it, I highly advise you to check out the landmark show, That Girl, starring Marlo Thomas. It's one of my favorite shows!

The women above are the women I've looked to most for style inspiration. Who are your style icons?
